Theatrical Outlook
The view from the
director's chair
Excerpt: Thursday,
August 31, 1995
Putting on a show
is difficult; assembling an entire theatrical season is even tougher.
With the curtain
about to go up on North Shore statges, we asked the artistic directors of area
companies to answer two questions:
- What are you
most excited about in the coming season?
- What do you see
as your theater's greatest challenge?
The replies follow.
When actual productions are mentioned, opening dates are in parentheses.
What excites all
of us at Marquee Theatre Company the most about the upcoming season is being
part of a tremendous theatrical renaissance - after many years during which
theatre was focused on experimental and contemporary works, the classic repertory
is being rediscovered. North Shore theatre lovers are coming in record numbers
to performances of shows like Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra," which Marquee
presented last season.
Our greatest challenge
as a company is being able to grow and develop quickly enough to meet the demand
of our audiences, as well as the astonishing number of performers and designers
from throughout the Chicago area, eager to be a part of a North Shore company
dedicated exclusively to classic family entertainment.
